Compañera, Julia DeBarrioz

I feel the need to be vague with this review which isn't something I do very often, but I don't want to include spoilers, so I will do my best to give the book justice.

I wasn't sure what to expect reading this, so it was a pleasant surprise. Compañera centers around Dakota, a bounty hunter for the PCT (Preternatural Control Team). She is tasked with tranqing shifters and bringing them in. Some in her unit have studied to take down vampires, something she has yet to do as it is a daunting task. But Dakota is good at what she does, and she's drawing quite a bit of attention with her newest takedown.

She's recently met Diego and she cannot deny the attraction between them. But he might just be more than she realized, and that doesn't sit very well with her. While it's true he wants her companionship, there is so much more he and others want from her. She must choose which course of action she wants to take.

Compañera was a unique take on the world of vampires, especially in the sense that they didn't take the forefront in this book. I very much enjoyed that Dakota sat center stage. Tasked with finding the missing girls and then thrown into a hot mess with Federico. Dakota is a perfect heroine, she's strong and assertive. Though I do wonder how she is getting that extra push and I imagine I need to read on through the series to find out.

There was a lot of intensity in this book, a good mix of action and suspense, add in some supernatural elements and you have a perfect read! Cazadora will be up next in my TBR, very well done.
