Karen has never had it easy, growing up with a mother who made it clear she didn't want her, who let anyone in for the right price. But she always had her older sister Erin to help her through. Although her sister has changed over time. She's aggressive and demanding of Karen's time and energy.
Karen has a few good friends, although her friendship with Daniel was tumultuous. He was always with a new girl and he disappeared out of Karen's life whenever it suited him, knowing that she wanted more than just friendship with him.
When Karen ends up Brookhaven where her mother was kept, she needs to fight through the fog to figure out what is going on and how she can get out of there.
Watching Karen's memories slowly resurfacing was a bit of a cheerleading moment. Every time she discovered a piece of herself, she got a bit stronger. Her situation was absolutely heartbreaking. If it wasn't for Amy and Adam I don't think she would have survived as long as she did. No matter what Karen thinks of herself, she is so much stronger than she gives herself credit for. Thrillers always give me a rush because there is so much suspense that I find myself racing through the book, and that's exactly what happened here. I needed to find out if Karen would beat all this. Starley did an amazing job for her first book and I anxiously await the next.
