Why She Lied, Julie Coons

June 10, 2019

Julie was kind enough to send me a paperback of this novel for review, and I devoured it in one day. Here's my review:

What drew me to Why She Lied was the fact it was based off a true story, the author's life. The writing is simple, but the subject material is not. We follow Julie as she navigates a relationship she should have never been in and all the horrors that follow. When you think things can't get worse, they do, and so much more so.

I think it would be easy for a reader to judge Julie for her mistakes, but a person that has been raised in such an abusive atmosphere tends to repeat their mistakes because they are a learned behavior. Her mother was a narcissist who was both physically and mentally abusive, which was carried on through Catholic school. That was the precedent in which her relationships followed.

While there are a few words in here that are offensive, and could easily be removed, I thought Why She Lied was a compelling read. Julie is a remarkably strong person, who survived through so much to be able to come out on the other side to tell her story. The story is a bit repetitive at times, but the message is strong. Every year thousands of women and children are stolen and sold into slavery. Julie's story is just the tip of the iceberg. Nicely done.

You can read my review on Amazon and Goodreads, give it a "like" if you've enjoyed it. Why She Lied is available on Amazon for $4.99, it's enrolled in KU.
