These girls! Oh, each of them has been through so much and I empathized with them in different ways. Being the baby in a group of 3 sisters might have helped with that. What better place to heal old wounds than on the water? Their father set up 2 weeks at a lake house with tasks to get them talking and with the hopes of healing the rift.
Maria is trapped in a marriage where her husband has checked out. It also doesn't help that she suspects him of having an affair. She feels alone in her marriage and alone as a parent, worried about giving each of her children the time they deserve.
Lauren is dealing with a broken body that just keeps getting worse. Because of how she was when she was younger, she doesn't feel that she can reach out to her sisters for help. (Poor Lauren, I know all too well what it's like dealing not only with a broken body but with a sister that holds your past against you).
Being the baby, Avery felt abandoned by her sisters when they up and moved out, leaving her behind. It didn't matter that she had a good dad, it's that feeling of loss, of not having someone to help you navigate being a teen. Not having a mother to guide her, she needed her sisters. She's also gone through something traumatic that has changed her entire life and I suspect she has PTSD.
I related to Avery the most, and I will say, an apology goes a long way. Sometimes we just need other people to recognize their mistakes to make us feel better. They are good women who just needed to rebuild their bond and their father knew this, which is why he set this all up. Rebecca is a great storyteller, and she gave us some wonderful characters to work with. The Rift Between Us is an easy and quick read. It was a fun journey watching them heal. I was so drawn to the women and the storyline that once I started the book, I didn't want to put it down. A wonderful read!
